Turning Your Dining Table Into a Chalkboard

Turning Your Dining Table Into a Chalkboard

chalk tableEating around the table as a family is an important part of our family’s traditions. Unfortunately our dining table is old, rickety, and needs to be replaced and it seems to detract from our family dinners instead of adding to them. So when I saw the idea of painting your dining table with chalkboard paint I was intrigued. This idea is from Kristen at We Are That Family.

At first I was not sure if Kristen was crazy or a genius. Would I seriously consider painting my dining table with chalkboard paint? I mean, what if people come over for dinner?  Would they want chalk-dust all over them?  Would it look terrible?  But when I read Kristen’s post about how it actually improved their family devotional times and encouraged togetherness around the table, I decided to give it a try.  The table turned out to be quite a fun project and it was pretty easy to accomplish as well.

You can find chalkboard paint at your local hardware store or even on Amazon. Follow the directions which are basically sand, paint, dry, paint, condition, enjoy. I would suggest using a roller and not a brush.  I used a brush and that combined with the wood grain on my table resulted in some lines on the table.  However, it is a fun and colorable surface that my family is really enjoying.  And if anyone comes over for dinner, I can just throw on a table cloth (or give them some chalk).

Thank you soooo much for this IDEA I LOVE IT! We are looking to buy a house and are in the horrible waiting of approval process and we have decided to do my 7 year olds room COMPLETELY in Chalk board paint so he can decorate it on his own! I may end up adding this as well THANK YOU!

  2. Totally thinking about doing this…our IKEA table isn’t that old, but the top has taken a beating & really needs refinished.

On another note, why can’t Pinterest find any images on this page?! I want to pin this article.

I wouldn’t do this to my dining table – but I am building a playroom for when the grandkids come – and am going to do this to a couple of the craft tables in there – thanks for the idea!

  5. This is such a great idea – we have a table that we inherited from relatives – the top surface was stained from water marks of years gon by – now I have a new project – PAT CATAN’s HERE I COME!!!

  6. Great idea…I recently did this with an easel my husband built. One side I painted with homemade chalkboard paint and turned out really cool. If you want to save some money, you can mix 1 tbsp un-sanded grout with 1 cup paint, mix well, then paint several coats on your surface, lightly sanding in between coats for a smoother finish. Mix in small batches as it can clump/harden while it sits. 🙂

  7. This is a fun project. Thank you for sharing with us.

  8. This is such a cute idea! I have an old coffee table I might try this with!
