The Space Between Us is a coming of age story like no other. The movie tells the inspirational story of a boy raised on Mars who falls in love with a girl on Earth, struggles with his identity and purpose, and seeks a sense of belonging. Although the story is unique, the issues he faces are common to mankind. The Space Between Us is touching, suspenseful, funny, romantic, and adventurous. The movie is also full of beautiful imagery and breathtaking views.
Gardner Elliot is like a lot of 16 year old boys, but also unlike any of them. Like most teens, he craves human interaction, adventure, and a sense of purpose. However, Gardner has never set foot on Earth and his existence is a secret. That does not stop Gardner from doing whatever he can to meet the girl of his dreams, find his mysterious father, and experience a life worth living. I highly recommend this movie for families with older children. As I always say, know your child. The movie is rated PG-13 for brief sensuality and language. I did not find the language to be an issue. However, the brief sensuality was a scene running about 3-5 minutes long in which Gardner and Tulsa (his love interest) kiss and then lay together in a sleeping bag. Both teens appear to be naked in the sleeping bag. It is a romantic scene and sexual activity is implied as possible, but not shown. The scene could be uncomfortable if you have smaller children and don’t know what is going to happen. Rest assured parents, there is no nudity or sexual activity shown. My nine year old daughter watched the movie with no issue.
This movie made me laugh, cry, and appreciate people more. I also appreciated the compelling and original story-line. The Space Between Us is not, strictly speaking, a sci-fi movie as much as it is a coming-of-age movie. I think you will like it.
Rating: PG-13 for brief sensuality and language.
