I have a confession to make. Even though both of my kiddos were excited to see Zootopia, I seriously dreaded having to sit through yet another movie with talking animals and cute characters. I reluctantly dragged myself to an advanced screening of Zootopia and for the first five to ten minutes, it appeared that my fears were justified. The movie opens with cute little bunnies in a fun and playful setting. But a tense scene with a bully quickly made it clear that Zootopia is not just another cute animal movie.
Of course, there are plenty of cute animal scenes, fun, and laughter, but Zootopia also has a dark side. The movie involves a plot against certain animals and the plot perpetrator does not care who gets hurt in the process. There are a few scenes that may prove scary for smaller children but the movie is rated PG and those action scenes are not very long and do not have tragic consequences.
Zootopia includes many bits of humor and fun scenes that were clearly written for the adults in the audience. As a mom who has had to sit through countless boring animal cartoons, I greatly appreciated the grown-up humor in Zootopia. There is also a larger message in the film. This story is not just a whodunit crime investigation. Zootopia deals with the realities of everyday prejudices, how they affect everyone, and how we can, with courage and compassion, rise above them. Zootopia reminds us that, in the words of Officer Hopps, “Life is messy.”
Take your kids to see Zootopia, and then talk about it afterwards.
Worth seeing in 3D? Toss-up. There are a few scenes with depth that look pretty cool in 3D, but there are no scenes that jump out at you.
Scene after the credits? There are concert scenes during the credits, but nothing after.
