It is hard to spoil a movie that is based on a true story, however, if you are like me, you do not know if the men stranded on the ship are saved and at what cost. I will not give that away, but I will say that this movie is one you need to watch. I found it to be an illustration of the tenacity of the human spirit and a testament of duty, courage, and honor.
The characters in The Finest Hours are well developed and likeable. You will laugh, cry, worry, cheer, and you might even catch yourself holding your breath. The cinematography is amazing and the imagery profound. The action scenes are long and at times overwhelming, but they are incredible. The Finest Hours is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of peril. I think the rating fits, but know your child.
Casey Affleck and Chris Pine both deliver convincing and compelling performances as two tormented men carrying incredible missions against all odds. Holliday Grainger’s performance is also noteworthy, although it will probably take a second screening before I can decide if I like her character. I have a feeling she will grow on me.
The Finest Hours is the kind of movie the likes of which we do not get to experience often these days. The story is compelling, the characters are deep and well delivered, and the audience feels invested in the outcome. Go see The Finest Hours and be prepared for an edge of your seat ride.
God bless the U.S. Coast Guard!
I attended a media preview screening of this movie. All opinions are my own.
