I usually only review family-friendly movies on this site, and with a much deserved R rating, Captain Fantastic is not a family-friendly movie. However, it is a movie about family and the effect that parenting outside of the box can have on both the children and parents.
There is not too much I can share about this movie without spoiling the plot for you. However, I can say that it is one of the best movies I have seen in quite some time. I heard another blogger say that after viewing this movie, she felt as if she had read a complete novel. I have to agree with her. Captain Fantastic is the story of a nontraditional family facing tragedy and change. A loss in the family causes them to leave their solitary world and enter into a mainstreamed world that they cannot relate to or understand. The result is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, blush, and think deeply.
As I mentioned, Captain Fantastic carries a much deserved R rating for language and brief graphic nudity. The nudity is full frontal male nudity that is unexpected but not sexual. There is quite a bit of off-color language in this movie, even from the children. However, none of it feels gratuitous.
Viggo Mortensen gives perhaps the best performance of his career and we get to experience several other talented actors as well. This movie will touch your soul and linger long after the final credits.
