Dragon Birthday Party Ideas

A Dragon Birthday Party

Dragon Birthday Party IdeasAfter several years obsessed with dinosaurs, my son graduated to dragon aficionado. This year he decided that he wanted to have a dragon-themed birthday party. It ended up being one of the most fun and successful parties I have hosted, so I thought I should share it with you. If you have a dragon lover in your home, you may be able to use some of these fun dragon birthday party ideas.

I shopped all over the place for party supplies and it ended up being harder than I thought it would be (I waited too long to order supplies online).  Apparently dragons are not popular in party supply stores right now, so we ended up doing everything ourselves, which probably ended up making the party even better.

I focused on three things: the dragon’s hoard, games, and food.

Dragon Birthday Party IdeasDecorations (aka the dragon’s hoard)

We decorated the house with some of my son’s dragon toys but overall we kept it pretty simple. My main decoration was the dragon’s hoard which consisted of a dragon’s nest, a dragon, and the dragon’s treasure collection. Here is the dragon’s nest. I placed shredded paper, toy dragon eggs, and some shiny objects into a wooden bowl.

Dragon Birthday Party IdeasThe dragon treasure collection was simply the shiny basket in which I kept the party favors.  I kept the party favors simple and inexpensive. The favor bag included a gold or silver bead necklace, a gold wrapped chocolate coin, a gold chocolate kiss, and a candy ring. When each child was given their favor bag, I explained that the dragon was sharing his treasure with them.  If you have a bigger budget you could get the dragon egg toys listed at the end of this post and they will be a big hit!

Dragon Birthday Party IdeasGames

Dragon egg toss. To get the kiddos started, hubby decided to take them outside into the desert heat in July. He had them all get into the trampoline and he tossed water balloons over at them. Sometimes they caught them and tossed them back. This activity was a hit. What kid doesn’t like water balloons? I think we may have exceeded the weight limit on the trampoline though. Fun!

Dragon Birthday Party IdeasPin the fire on the dragon. This is a spin-off of the old-fashioned pin the tail on the donkey. Hubby made a dragon from poster board and I printed off flames for each child. I had the children line up and play one child at a time. The child is blindfolded, handed a flame with their name and scotch tape on it, spun around, and then attempts to pin the fire as close to the dragon’s mouth as possible. Whoever is closest to the mouth wins. I was worried this game might be too babyish for the older kids in the group, but everyone enjoyed it.

Dragon coloring contest. I did not know if the kids would like this one or not.  But after playing two games outside, the kiddos were ready to sit still for a bit. I gave each child a dragon coloring page and some markers, crayons, and colored pencils. I told them they had 5 minutes. The kids enjoyed this so much that they ended up asking me to extend their time limit three times. I had the birthday boy pick the winner. One note, be sure to have the kiddos write their names on the back of the page so the judging is impartial.

Dragon Birthday Party Ideas

This party was a simple cake and ice cream party. We served cake, ice cream, punch and water. My sister is a very talented cake artist and she designed a fabulous dragon cake that everyone loved. The dragon was perched on a cave guarding its gold. The coins and dragon were made from fondant.

The punch was a big hit.  I could not stop drinking it. It was easy to make and was also dye-free. Throwing a dragon in the punch made it fun for the kiddos, too.

Dragon Birthday Party Ideas

I had several other ideas that my son shot down.  He did not want any games that involved hurting dragons or any food that insinuated eating them. Here are a few ideas we did not use due to my son’s objections or time constraints.

  • Serve tortilla chips and call them dragon scales.
  • Serve chicken wings and call them dragon wings.
  • Put the kiddos through dragon hunting training with an obstacle course.
  • Have them make dragon masks.
  • Play hot potato with a “dragon egg”.

This party was a big hit with all the kiddos. Do you have any other dragon party ideas? Have you ever had a dragon party?  Feel free to leave a comment.  Share and let’s talk about it.
