I wasn’t raised in the church and did not learn much about church history and leaders during my upbringing. Most of what I know I learned by reading and researching as an adult. I love reading about other believers throughout history and I find their stories inspiring and enlightening. I recently had the chance to read 10 Christians Everyone Should Know (edited by John Perry) and I wanted to share it with you.
The book includes ten mini-biographies of people who vary in their backgrounds and influence. They include:
Saint Patrick
Galileo
Anne Bradstreet
John Bunyan
Johann Sebastian Bach
Jane Austen
D.L. Moody
George Washington Carver
Sergeant York
William F. Buckley, Jr
Each of these ten chapters is written by a different author so at times the flow can be uneven if you read more than one chapter in a sitting. In addition, there were some people included in the book who seem like wonderful people, but would not make my list of Christians everyone should know. I was, however, exposed to a few people I did not know much about including George Washington Carver, who I only knew as the inventor of peanut butter (for which he has my eternal gratitude). His biography was so engaging and I grew to really admire this man.
Some chapters were a little dry and insignificant to me but others were amazing. My three favorite chapters were the biographies of Saint Patrick, Galileo, and George Washington Carver. I was so inspired and intrigued by how they stayed true to their faith in the face of catastrophic challenges. I learned quite a bit from these three chapters and would recommend the book based on these three chapters alone.
This book is available in both paperback and Kindle format.
I received an electronic copy of this book from BookSneeze to facilitate an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Wow, what a wonderful bunch of people! Wouldnt it be nice to even have met and knew even one!!
Interesting, I didn’t know many of these people were Christian.
Interesting, I didn’t know a lot of these people were Christians. Very cool.
Wow, I just happened to stumble upon your blog, and when I read this, I knew I had to get this! Sometimes my daily devotional reading can start to feel “stale” to me…and this would be a nice supplement to my reading! Thanks for sharing!
