Smallfoot

Smallfoot is a fun and entertaining story about a Yeti who discovers that the mysterious smallfoot creature exists. When his village’s strict belief system forces the community to rejects his claims, he sets out to prove his story is true. Along the way, he finds allies in unexpected places and is shocked to learn a village secret that forces him to make a critical decision.

My eleven-year-old daughter enjoyed Smallfoot and already has a favorite character, Meechee (voiced by Zendaya). I found the film much more entertaining than I expected, however I was unsure where the story-line was going for a little while. There are moments where the film seems to be encouraging children to question all of their culture’s belief systems, rules, and traditions. As a person of faith, I found this troubling. However, the belief systems, rules, and traditions that the film’s protagonists are questioning are based on lies and attempts to control the village. I encourage my children to seek truth and that is what this film does.

Aside from the lofty message, the film is also fun. You cannot really tell from the trailers, but Smallfoot has several musical numbers. The songs are varied in style and add to the film’s entertainment value. The characters are likable and the story, while a little predictable, is interesting. This is a fun film your family will enjoy. Smallfoot is rated PG for some action, rude humor, and thematic elements.
