Book Review: One Call Away by Brenda Warner

Sometimes you read a book that you expect to be mediocre and find it to be a gripping page turner that you cannot put down. This was my experience when I recently had the opportunity to read One Call Away by Brenda Warner.  The only reason I decided to read this particular book was because Brenda is married to my favorite NFL player ever, Kurt Warner.  I figured that an honorable Christian man like Kurt Warner wouldn’t marry just any ol’ gal so I guessed that there was something special about Brenda. Although, I admit that I did suspect that she might be a trophy wife with a heart of gold.

My first surprise was right in the beginning of the book when I found out Brenda was a Marine. Ok, what trophy wife could get through Marine training? I knew then that I had Brenda figured all wrong. As I continued to read the book I found myself laughing, crying, in shock, and cheering Brenda on all the way to the end.  I generally do not read autobiographies, but this book has me questioning that self-imposed guideline. I have never been so engaged by a person telling their own story before.

I am tempted to share with you a list of details from One Call Away, but I hope you will read this book and I do not want to ruin the surprise of some of the twists and turns the book takes you on.  Without spoiling the story for you, I can say that Brenda faces unbelievable tragedies, challenges, tests of faith, unexpected grief, failure and success and she does it all with amazing and strong faith. I was so inspired and uplifted by reading this book.

One thing I greatly appreciated about Brenda was that she spent several pages of this book owning up to mistakes she has made in life and giving people grace for theirs.  She never makes herself out to be better than others and offers forgiveness in situations where I might not have been so quick to forgive. Brenda is an amazing woman and I highly recommend her book One Call Away.
