If you are like most parents, you do not allow your kiddos to play in the sun for an extended period of time without sunblock. As a desert dweller and skin cancer survivor myself, I always have sunblock handy and apply it to my kiddos often. However, that desire to protect my children’s skin from the Sun’s harmful UV rays has left me forgetful of protecting their eyes. I was recently contacted by Real Kids Shades and asked if I would do a review of their product. They sent me several pairs of their kid-friendly sunglasses and a lot of literature as well.
I was quite surprised as I read through the information RKS sent to me. It seems that I am not the only parent overlooking the health of their children’s eyes. According to Prevent Blindness America, while 82% of parents make sure their children wear sunscreen, only 32% require sunglasses. Even within that 32%, many parents do not take the UV protection seriously and buy toy sunglasses that can actually be worse than not wearing sunglasses at all. How is that possible? As it turns out, shaded lenses without 100% UV protection will relax pupils, causing them to dilate and let more harmful radiation into your child’s eyes.
Here is some other information I got from RKS. Please read through this:
Sun Damage Is Permanent and Cumulative
Unlike skin cells, eye lenses cannot repair themselves. Once they’re damaged, they’re damaged forever. Eye lens cells are never replaced and over time, the harm done is cumulative. This can lead to serious eye diseases and even blindness.
Eye Disorders Caused By Sun Damage
- Cataracts
- Age-related macular degeneration
- Pterygia – abnormal tissue grown on the whites of the eyes
- Sin cancer around the eyes
- Photokeratitis – sunburn of the cornea
