S'mores Trail Mix (and Campfire Safety Tips)

S’mores Trail Mix (and Campfire Safety Tips)

S'mores Trail Mix Recipe (and campfire safety tips)

My son’s Cub Scout Den was recently learning about fire safety and they built a beautiful pretend fire. It was quite impressive and quite a shame we couldn’t really light it up (we were indoors at a location that does not allow fires). I knew the boys would be excited about making any kind of fire, even a pretend one, so I wanted to plan a fun snack to go along with the evening’s theme. Of course the best campfire snack is a nice sticky s’more but that requires an actual fire. Instead, I threw together some s’mores inspired trail mix and the boys went crazy for it!

This trail mix has only three ingredients and takes just a few minutes to make. It can be served in a bowl or even in plastic snack bags – however you wish!

S’mores Trail Mix

Ingredients

  • Golden Grahams cereal
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate chips

Directions

Combine the ingredients in a ratio that fits your tastes. I used roughly two parts each of marshmallows and cereal to one part chocolate chips. Gently mix the ingredients together and serve.

Now, just for fun, here are some of the fire safety tips the boys learned in the meeting before enjoying their s’more trail mix.

Outdoor Campfire Safety Rules (from the Webelos handbook)

  1. Follow all rules of your campsite.
  2. Clear all burnable materials from your 10-foot fire circle. Don’t build the fire under overhanging branches of trees or shrubs or near roots of trees.
  3. NEVER leave your fire unattended.
  4. Have a pot or bucket of water nearby in case sparks start a fire away from the fire circle.
  5. When you are finished cooking, make sure the fire is DEAD OUT. Spread the coals and ashes and sprinkle them with water. Stir and sprinkle until the site is cold. Feel it with your hand to make sure.
