Four Ways To Use Walmart’s Savings Catcher You May Not Know About

4 Ways To Use Walmart's Savings Catcher You May Not Know AboutMy sister is a couponer extraordinaire. She is the one in line ahead of you who gets 85% off once the coupons are tallied.  I have never been able to master that level of savings, but I do what I can. One of the methods I use is the Walmart Savings Catcher which involves downloading the Walmart app onto your phone, scanning the QR code from your store receipt, and then letting Walmart ad match for you. If a lower price is found, you get money back in the form of an e-gift card (so far I’ve gotten over $40 back).

For the first several months I only used the app to save money, but the more familiar I became with the app, the more uses I found for it. Let me share four of the ways I use Walmart’s app that have really been helpful to me when I am out shopping at Walmart or even at any other grocery store.

Retrieving Receipts – Unlike some other big box stores, Walmart has a pretty user-friendly return policy. However, there are times a return might be difficult without a receipt. Did you know Walmart’s Savings Catcher stores a digital copy of your actual receipt? Open up the Walmart app, then open the menu in the upper left hand corner. Click on Purchase History and then select the appropriate shopping trip. In the upper right hand corner, find the icon that looks like a ripped page. Click that and you will be looking at your receipt from that purchase date, including the bar-code. This can be used for returns. Notice that you can also share the receipt!

Searching for Past Purchases – I was recently standing in front of a shelf full of brats and sausages trying desperately to remember which brand it was that my son had loved so much. I knew it was made from chicken and that it was spicy, but there were several that fit that description. I opened up my Walmart app planning to search through several receipts, line by line. That is when I noticed the search feature you see in the image below. I typed in the word chicken and in a matter of seconds I found the brand name and picture of the chicken sausages I was looking for. This could be useful in any store, not just at Walmart.

Checking Prices on Items Previously Purchased – This feature is especially useful if you are not at Walmart and want to know if the store you are at is offering a competitive price. I used this feature the other day when the grocery store I was in had coffee on sale. I was pretty sure that the sale price was still higher than Walmart’s normal price, so I looked up what I had paid at Walmart the previous week. I was right and I was glad I did not buy the coffee simply because it was on sale. (UPDATE: You can also use the Barcode feature in the app to scan items to see how much they cost while you are in Walmart or at other stores!)

Checking How Often You Buy Something – Finally, by using the search feature, you can see just how often you are buying a product. For example, type in cookies and see how many times you have purchased cookies, if you dare. Or better yet, use this feature to see how many jars of peanut butter you buy in six months so that when it is dramatically discounted you will know how many to buy during that 10 for $10 sale.

So what did I miss?  Is there another way you use this app?  Please share!

I love this app and have saved $120 so far. I never thought of looking up a Walmart price while at another store though. Thanks.

  2. I use this APP all the time, so far I’ve gotten over $140 back! Christmas money!!!! Thanks for the tips, I could have used the one about returning something a few weeks ago, but now I know!!

  3. Super ckever suggestions, thanks!

  4. You can also check prices when you are in any store. If you are in a walmart it will automatically give you the in store price when you scan a barcode. But you can use the app anywhere to compare your favorite walmart lications price to the store that you are inside of.

  5. I love this app. Last year it paid almost all of the cost of one of those little cars toddlers can ride in for my son. Then this past summer we were able to get things for our new house. I have already saved over $160, and will probably cash out closer to Christmas again this year! Nev er thought about price checking when at the grocery store, thanks for the tip!

  6. One thing I found out, you cannot scan another person’s receipt even if you have their permission. You have to have purchased the items yourself.

    • Not true. I scan receipts I pick up trom the ground outside walmart and have no trouble scanning them.

      • My girlfriend and I got the idea one Saturday to wander around the entire parking lot of 2 Walmart stores in the Chicago area. The 2 stores yielded us almost 2700.00 in receipts. Those receipts brought us a total of just under 250.00. That’s close to 10% return for spending an hour and a half wandering around and then another hour or 2 creating enough email addresses to get them scanned in since you can only do 7 a week. I work next door to a Walmart so I swing by after work daily and find at least 7 and get them entered in. Those are averaging about 100.00 a week. Quite frankly its too easy to not do it. The way I see it is that people are littering and I’m “cleaning up”.

        • That is crazy! Great idea!

        • That’s illegal it got me banned from Walmart and almost got me arrested. Then again, the police will harass anyone for anything here in Florida lol

          • Cody Westover says

what part of florida? because ive been doing it in orlando for a while. and have got permission by the managers,

        • Plant artichokes! They grow brilliantly from seed, survive anything and give you lunch all summer. [They are only thistles with attitude.] Asparagus, I buy too – about $10US a kg at the moment, because it’s early spring here in New Zesedna.Chelra, Heather

      • Fake news, you can scan and use any Walmart receipt within the usual 7-day window

  7. I like this app also. When I was at Wal Mart the cashier said she has been able to put our local stores into the savings catcher. I don’t think you can … I have searched everything! Do you know if that is the case?
We live in a rural area and don’t have Krogers, Piggly Wiggly etc. We have Shopko, Econo Foods, Super One etc.

I had 11.85 in reward $ and when I looked again it said I had redeemed 11.85 and had 0 . I’ve never redeemed anything , I don’t even know how. So I’m not using it anymore.

  9. Mary Versack the money is in a gift card. You must sign on to Walmart.com go to savings catcher. Then go to my reward card. The drop down menu will say resend my egift card. Click on that. Your gift card will be sent to your email address. Print that out. It has a barcode the cashier will use. The money will be on that. You can also keep accumulating your savings and then have the card resent. Hope that helps.

  10. Thank you! I did not know about this app; just downloaded it. I appreciate your clear explanations!

  18. Sharon Sikes says

I am missing money from my Savings Catcher app and have received no explanation from Walmart. I googled the app and learned that there are many people missing money from their app. I had requested my reward sent as an ecard and had not used it. When I did use it I found $17.09 less than I should have. I went to the store and had what was remaining transferred to an actual gift card. I hope that keeps my reward safe.

  20. Is there any way of deleting old receipts out of savings catcher?. I have some from 2 years ago. Takes a while to bring up my app with so many on there.

  21. Linda Tottleben says

I have been ordering some groceries online with free delivery. Is there any way to use Savings Catcher with these purchases since I don’t receive a receipt?

    • I have set up my Walmart Pay feature on the app. It uses my Savings Catcher refunds and then goes to my preferred payment method for the balance. When this is used, the app asks me if I want to submit the receipt. Maybe you can try that? Ask customer service if this doesn’t work.

  23. I purchase a lot of Walmart product on line. How do I apply savings catcher to that, where is the bar code?
You only get an invoice, where is the TC#.

  24. Thanks, I’m just getting started with the Walmart App. I wanted to find if my receipts were stored and while it has moved locations, it is available and I learned a few other tricks with your post. Now I can’t wait to see the savings add up!

  25. Twoods1642 says

How do I add orders that were made using the Wal-Mart app? When you pick up orders from the store, there’s no paper receipt, only an orange and white sticker on each item that only lists the order number, customer name, due time and due date. There’s no TC# on the sticker. When I check the Wal-Mart app, there’s no receipt for online orders. If you purchase items using their app, the receipts should automatically be added to the Savings Catcher!

  26. Anybody know how to get my savings catcher e-gift card number to use at store or online? I want to use at store and have used $150 worth in the past but when I go into account to view it it just shows my balance and last 4 numbers

  27. I’ve noticed a big decline on saving catcher items Walmart gives a refund or credit for, especially soda, and many other items.

  28. Tiffany griffin says

I have food lion receipts and I can not find away to scan them can you not you those? And also Dollar General I can’t get it to work on it either… I have gotten one receipt from food lion that had the box on it to scan but that was like 3 weeks ago and now I have like 4 more but there’s nothing to type in or scan can anyone tell me why?

  29. Walmart Saving Catcher is a waste of time, after you spend time filing your receipts and you accumulate some cash back it disappears from your account and customer service don’t even have an explanation so…use your time for something more useful. My disappeared on May 25, 2018.

  30. Sandra L. says

Another way to use Walmart’s Savings Catcher is that you can sync your Walmart receipts to QuickBooks or Xero. Its an app called Greenback. It automatically imports your receipts for you and even includes the product images and links! You can then export to QuickBooks, Xero, Concur, Google Docs or Excel. It learns as you go so it can automatically fill in fields for you, categorize your expenses, and attach the receipt too. It’s FREE! Check it out at https://www.greenback.com/in

  31. If I bought an item with my savings catcher money . can you retun it and how is the refund done?

  32. can anyone tell me how to use my savings catcher without the app. i cant download to my phone its too old. i use to print out from my email but not i cant do that anymore.

    • Hi Elana, For in-store purchases only, I think you can ask for your receipt to be emailed to you at checkout. Then to submit them to SavingsCatcher just click on the “Submit eReceipt Now” button within 7 days of your purchase. If you don’t have Walmart Pay or the Walmart app, you will need to have any actual $ money put on a real card. Otherwise you won’t be able to spend it.

  35. I would like to allow my husband to utilize the same savings catcher account on his phone that is on my phone. Basically one catcher account in the same household but used by two people. Is this possible?

  36. Judy Fraser says

Hey Y’all, I used this app. every time I shopped at Walmart. Cashed in $82 one time and $150 another. All 3 walmarts within 25 miles of my home have stopped savings catcher! I was told at the store that it’s not going to be in smaller stores(All 3 of theses are Super walmarts) I asked and was told there was no way I could continue with the app BECAUSE it was no longer available. I guess we can just keep being overcharged at our walmarts. SAD! no way to treat people who shop at your store.
