Marvel’s newest movie, Black Panther, is an origin story of epic proportions that thrusts the Black Panther character rightly into the middle of the franchise.
Black Panther is more than a superhero movie. It is a lesson in leadership, forgiveness, choices, and integrity. T’Challa becomes king of Wakanda after his father is killed. However, not everyone thinks he should be king. Soon, at least one rival arises to challenge his rule. Just when it seems life in Wakanda will go back to normal, an outsider arrives to claim a stake in Wakanda. Who is this newcomer, and what right does he have to claim authority in Wakanda?
Black Panther deals with many sensitive issues including racism, revenge, and oppression. These issues are handled in a way that doesn’t sugarcoat them, but also does not inflame them. We see the issues in the light of day and understand that finding answers is not easy, but is necessary. The movie also features women in prominent and strong roles. These incredible ladies are beautiful, but also strong, intelligent, and honorable.
Black Panther is visually stunning, and I am not just talking about the gorgeous cast. The awesome cinematography, brilliant costume design, and beautiful imagery is incredible. I did not get to watch the movie in 3D, but I am guessing it would be a 3D dream!
Black Panther provides many conversation opportunities for family. How should we deal with injustice? Should we always help others if we can? There is also a clear delineation between those who lead out of selfish ambition, and those who lead for the greater good. One of the last lines in the movie mentions “illusions of divisions” that separate people. There is a lot to unpack in this movie and families will have a lot to talk about afterward.
There is no significant adult content in this movie. However, there are some violent scenes that might frighten younger children as well as some rough language. The movie is rated PG-13, but I might say children who have seen the other Marvel movies will be fine.
Rating: PG-13 for for prolonged sequences of action violence, and a brief rude gesture.
Worth seeing in 3D? The media preview I saw was in 2D, but I kept thinking it would be amazing in 3D.
Scene after the credits? There is one stinger during the credits and one after.
