Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

I was just about to give up on chocolate chip cookies. I had experienced a few too many dozens of flat or sub par results from the traditional chocolate chip cookie recipes found on bags of chocolate chips, in cookbooks, and on the Internet. I had simply had enough. But I was facing a bag of chocolate chips that I really wanted to finish off so I googled chewy chocolate chip cookies and found the most amazing recipe that changed the way I think about chocolate chip cookies forever. When I presented my family with these mega cookies, they were in awe and their love me increased ten-fold.  Okay, so maybe that last part is not true, but they did really love these cookies.

I found this amazing recipe over at allrecipes.com and I knew I had to try it when I saw that it was rated 4.5 stars with over 6600 reviews.  I made this recipe almost exactly as it was given but I would bet adding some walnuts in would make it even better. Mmm…

Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until creamy.
  4. Mix in the flour mixture until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon.
  5. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto the cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 17 to 19 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted.
  7. Cool on baking sheets for 2-3 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Tips:

The original recipe suggested using parchment paper or greasing the cookie sheets. I did neither and they turned out just fine but I have amazing cookie sheets. Also, be sure to start checking the cookies for doneness at about 15 minutes as ovens vary. Finally, be warned, it is almost impossible to eat just one.
