Celebrating Family

Most of the crafts we do around here come from whatever is laying around. We probably would never do any crafts if I had to run to the craft store for supplies. I was about to throw away some cardboard rolls when I realized they could be the beginnings of a fun and frugal craft project.  I thought they were the perfect size and shape for some sort of wand and my daughter agreed. My son said he did not want a wand and said he would make a sea serpent instead.

I started by painting the rolls.  We had pink and blue spray paint on hand so I sprayed each roll and let them dry on the prongs of an upside down tomato cage. When the rolls were dry we got started on finishing them up.

For the fairy wand, I sprayed the painted and dried roll with spray gloss finish, rolled it in glitter, and sprayed it again. If you don’t have spray gloss finish, you could use spray adhesive. Once the wand was dry, I cut and glued the ribbon on.

My son took charge of his project. He colored a design on with a sharpie, cut a v-shape out of one end (tail), and used a hole punch to make the sea serpent’s eyes.

This was a fun and easy project. The children were very happy with the results and it kept us busy for quite awhile.  Have you used cardboard rolls for craft projects? Feel free to leave a comment.  Share and let’s talk about it.
