Growing Little Artists

June 20, 2011

Iris I painted with q-tips.I love art. Ever since I first starting learning about art, I have been hooked. I especially appreciate paintings. One of my daydreams is that I will someday have a vast amount of painting supplies and will spend hours on end painting. But back in reality the only painting that occurs in our home is done by my children. Both of my children love to paint, but my son would be willing to paint all day and night. I try to give them ample time to be creative – I like to think we are growing little artists.

Here are some tips to help encourage your little artists:

  • Artist at work Always be sure to have plenty of art supplies in your home. There is a plethora of affordable art products at Wal-Mart, Target, and even at the dollar stores.
  • Give your child opportunities to create art without specifications (other than basic safety and neatness guidelines).
  • Take your child to art museums and art shows.
  • Learn to talk about art with your child. This book might be helpful.
  • Display works of art in your home and encourage children to display them in their own rooms.
  • Display your child’s art where everyone can see it.
  • Invite your children’s friends over for painting parties or other opportunities to be creative.
